Oliver Nunn, Dani Gotts St. Clair and Emma Shiels delivered an advocacy workshop
3rd April 2025

3PB’s barrister Oliver Nunn, alongside Dani Gotts St. Clair and Emma Shiels, supported by Georgia Coleyshaw, delivered an advocacy workshop for the University of Nottingham Bar Society.
In advance of the workshop, students were given an exercise requiring them to prepare and deliver closing submissions at the end of a road traffic accident liability trial.
Students received interactive, one-on-one feedback in a group setting, using the Hampel method to help develop their advocacy skills and prepare them for the rigours of professional advocacy training at bar school and in their junior years of practice.
Oliver Nunn is an advocacy trainer for the Midland Circuit and has ten years of experience teaching at the University of Leicester, where he is an Honorary Associate Professor. Emma Shiels had a successful career in education before joining the bar, including teaching law and advocacy skills to A-Level students. Dani was a prolific mooter during her university studies and played a key role in establishing and judging several moots at NTU, where she continues to support their mooting competitions.
Students also had the opportunity to ask questions about life at the bar, developing a practice, and gained unique insights from Georgia regarding her perspective as a practice manager.
The event was organised by Hannah Jackson and Sarina Soofi from the Bar Society.
