FA barrister Sam Shurey transfers to 3PB
3rd January 2023
Sports and regulatory barrister Sam Shurey (2015 call), pictured here, has joined 3PB (3 Paper Buildings). Sam was formerly an in-house barrister at The Football Association (The FA), where he enjoyed a busy caseload including a wide range of disciplinary and safeguarding issues arising from youth, grassroots, non-league, Football League and Premier League football.
Sam's work at The FA involved advising on, and appearing in, cases concerning on-field misconduct , betting related misconduct, discrimination, social media and media comments, misconduct of intermediaries, anti-doping (including The FA’s Social Drugs Regulations) and interim and final safeguarding orders. Sam dealt with these issues both at first instance (before Regulatory Commissions and Safeguarding Review Panels) and on Appeal (to FA Appeal Boards). He will be using his experience in football to advise across other sports, acting for the regulator/governing body/league as well as defending sporting participants.
Sam is currently instructed to provide regulatory, disciplinary, and safeguarding support to the International Tennis Federation.
He also has a strong professional disciplinary background; appearing in cases before the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) prior to his move to The FA. He co-wrote LexisNexis guidance on NMC procedure and will be accepting instructions to act for regulators and professionals in, amongst others, the healthcare, education, policing and legal industries.
Mathew Gullick KC, head of 3PB's 57-strong Public and Regulatory team of barristers, said: "Sam is an outstanding sports lawyer and disciplinary/regulatory specialist. We are delighted to welcome him to our team."
