Dr Christopher Whelan to hold launch event for ‘The Bodyguards of Lies’, his new book about lawyers' conduct, truths and lies
16th January 2023
Join Dr Christopher Whelan for the launch of his new book ‘The Bodyguards of Lies’, recently published by Bloomsbury Publishing.
The event, to be held at the Tsuzuki Theatre, St Anne's College, Oxford, on Thursday 26 January from 5:30-7:30pm, will feature a brief presentation from the barrister-author Dr Whelan, followed by a short Q&A session with fellow employment barrister, Andrew McPhail. The reception, which will include opportunities to win a free copy of the book as well as purchase discounted copies, is free to attend and will have wine, beer and canapes served.
In reference to wartime deception plans, Winston Churchill once said ‘truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies’. In his latest book, Dr Whelan applies this to the law.
Using real-world case studies and commentary from both British and American lawyers, Dr Whelan reveals the ‘tricks of the trade’ that allow lawyers to become ‘bodyguards of lies’, protecting their clients’ truths – especially ‘inconvenient truths’ – from being revealed. This highly personal account of what can happen when a lawyer's duties to their client conflict with their duties to the legal system also looks in detail at the ethical codes and laws that regulate lawyers' conduct as ‘bodyguards of lies’.
