Top commercial litigation and arbitration barrister Kevin Pettican joins 3PB
12th August 2024
Former WilmerHale commercial litigation and arbitration lawyer Kevin Pettican, who practised for nearly twenty years from commercial chancery chambers in London, is set to relocate to Birmingham and join national chambers 3PB (3 Paper Buildings) where he will continue to develop his growing practice in the Midlands alongside his existing practice in London and internationally.
Kevin Pettican (call: 1994) joins today, Monday 12 August 2024, and will work alongside 3PB’s recent experienced commercial and international arbitration practitioner recruits such as Patrick Heneghan who joined 3PB from Skadden Arps, David Parratt KC (Deputy Head of Chambers) who moved from Arnot Manderson Chambers in Scotland, as well as the set’s established team including the industry-recognised David Berkley KC, Peter Collie, Seb Oram and Gavin Hamilton.
Kevin's impressive record includes appearances before various international tribunals as well as the UK domestic courts including the High Court and the Court of Appeal. He is perhaps best known in domestic litigation for his success in the UK Supreme Court in Szepietowski v The National Crime Agency, which is the leading authority on the equitable doctrine of marshalling; and for his role as sole counsel for the defendant in a 3-week High Court trial in Birmingham followed by a successful appeal to the Court of Appeal in Winter v Hockley Mint, the leading case about when a principal becomes vicariously liable for the fraud of their agent. He also acted for an Italian local authority (Busto di Arsizio) in the first case in which the English Commercial Court considered the effect of the decision of the Italian Supreme Court in Cattolica in the context of swaps litigation between the banks and Italian local authorities.
Patrick Heneghan, Deputy Head of 3PB's Commercial team, said: “Kevin's reputation as a leading expert in commercial, chancery and international arbitration precedes him. He will undoubtedly be a valuable addition to our already-thriving group.”
Kevin Pettican said: “3PB’s commanding position in the market together with the substantial resources available to its members represents the ideal platform for me to continue to develop my practice, both in the UK and internationally. Having recently moved to Shropshire, 3PB’s national presence will give me the ability to develop and grow my practice in the Midlands whilst continuing to work in London, throughout the UK, and internationally.”
