Employment and Equalities
Gareth was called to the Bar after leaving the British Army and is now highly regarded for his employment law expertise, representing both employers and employees in Employment Tribunals and the Employment Appeal Tribunal.
Gareth is ranked as a "Leading Junior" in the Legal 500, where it has been said that:
- "he has an incisive and forensic approach to legal arguments, and is an excellent advocate" (2015);
- "he has a great cross-examination style and is very effective" (2016).
In Chambers and Partners he has been said to be highly experienced in discrimination law and unfair dismissal cases, and:
- “an impressive advocate; sensible and pragmatic” (2015);
- "widely respected for his strategic approach to complex cases" (2016);
- "as well as being technically competent on legal issues, he is also able to demonstrate a good understanding of a client's business and its commercial drivers" (2016).
In the reported case of Vodafone Ltd v Miss A Nicholson UKEAT/0605/12/SM, an appeal before the former President of the EAT, the Honourable Mr Justice Langstaff, he was described as “engaging and candid.”
He has acted in the tribunal for a European Embassy, global car manufacturers, a leading multi-national engineering group, a number of local authorities and a myriad of SMEs.
Recent cases have included:
- acting on behalf of a local health board in Wales in a claim of race discrimination;
- acting on behalf of another local health board in Wales in a claim of age discrimination;
- acting on behalf of a household brand in seven interrelated race discrimination claims;
- a number of complex discrimination and whistleblowing claims in the airline industry;
- a nurse involved in the alleged mistreatment of infirm nuns at a Convent.
Gareth is also:
- a Rugby Football Union (“RFU”) Disciplinary Panel Chairman;
- a Rugby Europe/7’s Judicial Officer;
- an Army Rugby Union Disciplinary Panel Chairman;
- a member of the British Gymnastics Disciplinary Panel.
