Emma is an experienced family law barrister who advises clients in both public and private law matters.  Her areas of expertise include:

Public Law

Emma receives instructions from local authorities, parents, grandparents and guardians involving a variety of issues including chronic neglect, domestic violence, sexual abuse, mental health issues, complex medical evidence and NAI finding of fact hearings.

Emma has represented clients in cases involving:

  • ICO
  • s38(6) assessment
  • EPO applications
  • Placement applications
  • Revocation of placement orders

Private Law

Emma is briefed on all aspects of private law proceedings, including:

  • intractable contact disputes
  • leave to remove
  • child abduction
  • cases involving both physical and sexual abuse

Matrimonial Finance and Divorce

Emma advises in all areas of finance including:

  • third party interventions,
  • s.37 protective applications,
  • enforcement and variation of financial remedy orders

Emma is known for her pragmatic and commercial approach to matrimonial finance with a growing reputation for her experience in dealing with complex or medium to high net worth cases. Emma is often counsel of choice in cases involving a family business or those with non-disclosure issues, trusts and pension features.
Emma is also briefed on TOLATA claims and applications under Schedule 1 of the Children Act as well as contested divorces and nullity.

Examples of recent cases

Re W 2014 - Represented a mother in an application for an interim care order with a plan for immediate removal of the child from the mother's care. Successfully defeated the application in its entirety despite opposition from the Guardian, an adult psychiatrist and a child psychologist.

Re: C – Successfully represented a father against allegations of rape and threats to kill

Re: G – Represented a mother in private law proceedings in which the child had made numerous sexual abuse disclosures against the father. Successfully proved the allegations and achieved a no contact order and s.91(14) bar

Re F - Successfully represented a mother in her application for a return order under the Hague Convention

Emma offers sensitivity, humanity and empathy when advising clients but also adopts a robust yet pragmatic approach when required.
