Alex is a specialist family lawyer who accepts instructions in all areas of family law as well as for proceedings in the Court of Protection. Alex came to the Bar following two years spent in the family law departments of reputable solicitors firms. During this time he assisted a wide variety of clients in all areas of family law and developed a sensitive approach to the problems that are often faced by people who need representation within the family justice system.

Public Law

Alex has been regularly instructed on behalf of Local Authorities, parents, children, extended family members and interveners in public law children matters. In particular, he has experience of acting in the following circumstances:

  • Emergency contested applications where a Local Authority seeks the removal of a child.
  • Applications under s34(4) and s38(6) Children Act 1989.
  • Fact finding hearings where sexual, physical or emotional abuse is alleged.
  • Cases where non-accidental injuries are suspected.
  • Cases concerning alleged neglect.
  • Placement Order and Adoption Proceedings.
  • Special Guardianship and Wardship applications.
  • Cases with an international dimension.
  • Cases concerning parents or children with Special Educational Needs, cognitive impairment or capacity issues
  • Cases where drug and alcohol abuse or mental health concerns are a significant issue.
  • Secure Accommodation Orders.

Private Law

Alex has been regularly instructed and has experience of Child Arrangement matters and endeavors to see cases from first appointment to final hearing including:

  • Intractable disputes between parents regarding where a child should live or how often they should see the parent they are not living with.
  • Fact finding hearings including where allegations of domestic violence and sexual or physical abuse are alleged.
  • Cases with an international dimension.
  • Cases with significant social work involvement.
  • Case with an international dimension including relocation and abduction.

Finance

Alex has been instructed in financial claims following the breakdown of marriage as well as applications under Schedule 1 Children Act 1989, Child Maintenance claims and TOLATA 1996. He has been instructed at FDA and FDR and been involved with cases at final hearing.  Alex has also been instructed on Inheritance (Family Provision for Dependants) Act 1975 claims.

Court of Protection

Alex has been instructed in Court of Protection matters. Recently, he has acted in a case where the sexual abuse of a person who lacked capacity was alleged. He has also acted for two Local Authorities in an application concerning an elderly lady who lacked capacity.

Direct Access

Alex is qualified to accept cases under the direct public access scheme. He accepts direct access instructions in family cases to advise generally in respect of proceedings or proposed applications, assist in the preparation of paperwork, and represent clients at Court from the beginning to the end of a case.

Recent Cases

Re G [2015] – Acted on behalf of a father in care proceedings and successfully resisted an application for a Placement order made by a Local Authority in relation to his two sons.

Re JV [2014] – Successfully appealed on behalf of a father following an order forbidding him direct contact with his son after the judge found serious deficiencies in the evidence of the Cafcass officer.

Re A [2014] – Successfully defended an intervener in care proceedings against allegations that he had physically abused a baby.
